Record of the Edomites

Before continuing with the history of the people descending through Jacob, the Genesis record pauses to give final mention to Esau (Edom) and his descendants. The Edomites, as they will soon be called, will live in the hill country of Seir, which lies southeast of the Dead Sea. They will become constant enemies of Jacob's descendants, the Israelites, and their opposition to God's chosen people will be so bitter over the years that Edom will become a symbol of unbelief and hostility to God. In the last days they will be singled out as a special object of God's punishment. This nation will spring from Esau and his three wives, whose names have already been cited in the Genesis record. In this account, additional names of two of his three wives are given: Adah (Mahalath), Oholibamah (Judith), and Basemath (as earlier given). The sheer length of this listing of Esau's descendants attests to how numerous and powerful the Edomites will become.

Gen.36:6-8  Esau took his wives and sons and daughters and all the members of his household, as well as his livestock and all his other animals and all the goods he had acquired in Canaan, and moved to a land some distance from his brother Jacob.
